ASPIRE: Support Services for Looked After Children in Newcastle
ASPIRE is a partnership between services contributing dedicated staff to a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary support team for Looked after Children (LAC).
Vision
Our vision is to provide an effective, efficient and well-co-ordinated wrap-around service that supports and empowers children and young people and leads to positive outcomes in all 5 areas of the Every Child Matters agenda. In addition to direct work with young people, ASPIRE seeks to support other services and bring additionality to their work with this group of vulnerable young people through close collaboration.
Objectives
ASPIRE adopts the following objectives:
- To work with carers and other support services to identify the individual needs of looked after children and young people
- To plan effectively and within budget constraints to address the full range of needs of the LAC population
- To develop a flexible service that can respond to changing needs through consultation with service users and providers and rigorous self-evaluation
- To provide a service that is both readily accessible and empowering of young people
- To work directly with young people to address the five outcome areas of the Every Child Matters agenda and specifically to
- Develop resilience and emotional well-being
- Support those seeking to provide stability of care and educational placement
- Promote engagement with learning and positive activities and increase achievement
- Support young people in choosing a healthy life-style
- Narrow the gap in attainment between Looked After Children and their peers
- Promote positive progression into independence, adulthood and economic well-being
- To offer advice, training and support to carers and key services working with Looked After Children
- To create a cohesive and consistent support network for their fellow professionals by engaging in a programme of joint development work
- To develop a single referral point and discussion forum that facilitates the development of individual support packages for children and young people with high level needsÂ
What do we do?
ASPIRE’S support services are made up of Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services for LAC (CAMHSLAC), Educational Achievement and Health Support Services (EAHST), LAC Education Support Team (LACES) and the designated nurse for LAC. We focus on a number of key areas including
