Attendance

The majority of pupils in Newcastle attend school regularly; considerable numbers achieve 100% attendance every term and many maintain this high level. However, there is a significant minority whose attendance is not only a cause for concern on an individual basis but also when aggregated, has a detrimental effect on the attendance levels that are achieved by schools and the local authority.

What have we done to raise levels of attendance?

The Attendance strategy was approved in June 2007

A range of initiatives are in place working with schools and families to improve school attendance. This includes rewards for high levels of attendance, first day response to absence, truancy sweeps with the police, fast-track monitoring which can lead to the use of legal sanctions (penalty notives and prosecutions) against parents whose children do not attend school regularly.
