Childcare sufficiency assessment

The Childcare Act 2006, placed a duty on local authorities to conduct an assessment of the sufficiency of childcare in their area, as a first step to securing sufficient childcare for parents in Newcastle, as far as is practicably possible.

The CSA Report is the outcome of the work undertaken to:-

  • map the current supply of childcare in Newcastle,
  • consult on the demand from parents and employers,
  • identify the gaps between supply and demand,
  • highlight the action to be taken to meet the childcare needs of parents in order that they can work, or undertake education or training leading to work.

The focus here has been on childcare provision registered by Ofsted, and on the private, voluntary and independent sector, which play such an important part in providing choice for parents.

The CSA report will be in draft form by October 2010 and available to download here for comment. Publication date is March 2011 in time for the new Children and Young People's Plan.
