If a school is approached by a member of the public requesting access to information, what are our responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act 2000?
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 came fully into force 1 January 2005. There is now a legal right for any person to ask a school for access to information held by that school. The Freedom of Information Act 2000 aims to promote greater openness and accountability across the public sector (including schools) by:
- Ensuring the general public have the right of access to all information held by schools
- Requiring all schools to publish information which you hold proactively through the adoption of "publication schemes", and to publish information in line with the scheme.
Where can we get further guidance?
