Children’s Services Newsletter: How to guide
Why read the Children’s Services newsletter?
The newsletter is intended to communicate latest developments, achievements and progress against improving outcomes for children, young people and families. This primarily focuses on what is happening within the city to improve those areas identified as priorities within the Newcastle Plan for Children and Young People.
The newsletter seeks to inform colleagues across the council, schools and the Children’s Trust including representatives from voluntary and community sector, health and other agencies.
Â
Who receives the newsletter?
Our mailing list includes Children’s Services staff and all key partnerships, as well as people who have signed up for more information, for example through attending the Children’s Trust annual conference.

What type of articles are featured within the newsletter?
- Articles for the newsletter should be relevant and of interest to the wider children’s services audience and not directorate staff or school specific.
- Updates on projects and initiatives should demonstrate impact (what difference has it made).
- Is there someone willing to feature in your article, can you include a case study?
- If promoting or reporting back on an event, is it timely in view of deadlines and distribution dates.
- Be concise. You should aim for your article to include no more than 250 words.
- If you provide photographs, these must have appropriate permissions for use
- Write in plain English using short words and sentences (maximum 20 words)
- Use bullets not long lists in text.
- Order your text – human interest at the beginning, if necessary refer to plans or strategies at the end.
- Provide contact details for more information – phone number as well as web address.
- Avoid quotes from councillors and officers – if you do use them keep them short or change them into ordinary text
- Use ‘we’ not ‘children’s services’ unless this is essential to the readers understanding.

Editorial decisions
The Information and Communications team has editorial control. We may edit your text so it is appropriate for the audience, to meet plain English standards and the overall in-house writing style, or if we don’t have enough space for the full version. In each issue we aim for a balance of content across all five Every Child Matters outcomes.

How often is it published?
The newsletter is produced monthly.
