Parent and carer participation is about professionals working with parents and carers as partners to improve services for themselves, their children and their families.
Parents and carers are the experts in how services relate to them and their family, without their contribution to planning services, real change cannot take place. If parents and carers are at the forefront of influencing change today it will not only help parents now but will benefit parents, carers and their children in the future.
See parent and carer participation section within the Newcastle plan for children and young people 2009/10
This strategy has been developed by a group of parents and carers who access a variety of services for children and young people, paid workers who work with parents and carers and senior managers.

Newcastle Children's Trust Board have recently been updated on the EDCM Charter. All members of the Trust Board have whole heartedly endorsed this document as being central to the success of the future development of high quality services for disabled children and their families. The Children's Trust Board will continue to review and promote the progress of this work. Please find attached the EDCM Charter (Added 13 January 2010).
The aim of the day was for parents, carers and paid workers to come together to discuss issues and put plans in place for specific areas that will make a real difference to disabled children, young people and their families. This is why the conference was called ‘Putting Words into Actions’. The Parent Participation Steering Group decided to have the conference in June so Action Plans could feed into service developments for the following year; all the service areas covered were told the action plans had to be achievable in a year.
