The Government has decided to stop the delivery of the Tellus Survey as part of its commitment to reduce the burdens which data collection imposes on schools and local authorities. The decision is with immediate effect, which means the Tellus5 survey will not be delivered as planned in the autumn term.
The Tellus portal closed on the 17 September 2010.Â
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Maria Charles, Humaira Ishaq or Claire Evans at NFER on 01753 637100 or at tellus-rds@nfer.ac.uk.

This year all Newcastle Schools with years 6, 8 and 10 are invited to take part in the survey.
Tellus is a national survey which gathers children and young people's views on their life, their school and their local area. Findings from the survey are used to inform policy development and to measure progress and performance, at a local and national level, across the five Every Child Matters (ECM) outcomes. The survey was originally developed by Ofsted as an online survey in 2007 (Tellus2) and run again in 2008 (Tellus3). The Department for Children, Schools and Families is now responsible for the survey and has commissioned the NFER to further develop and deliver Tellus4 in Autumn 2009.
As part of the development of Tellus4, we are also working with Triangle Services - an independent organisation which works with disabled children, their families and inclusive groups of children and young people in a range of contexts. Triangle will help develop the visual design and content of Tellus4 to ensure the survey is more accessible to all children and young people.
We are also currently working with experienced PSHE and Citizenship consultants to develop lesson plans and supporting materials for schools to use pre- and post-participation in the survey, which will help support aspects of the wider curriculum.
Please see the attached document for an overview of the Tellus4 survey. You can also find a presentation for headteachers from Deb Tyler, Newcastle City Council's Head of Performance Management and Information.Â
