Newcastle Workforce Development Online Training

Currently the online training offers three courses

1. Integrated Working Overview (CAF)

This basic awareness course is made up of four learning objects: The common assessment framework (CAF), information sharing, the role of the lead professional and ContactPoint. The course will give you an in depth understanding of these topic areas so that you can confidently discuss the concepts with families, should you need to. It will provide underpinning knowledge for Lead Professionals or practitioners, prior to face to face training.

For many practitioners and managers further Integrated Working training will be needed.  For example, practitioners who will be CAF Assessors or Lead Professionals must access further training.

2. Strategic Managers Integrated Working – Common Assessment Framework

This course is for individuals who are either a manager or leader of staff who work with children, young people and families.  This course provides a strategic overview of: The common assessment framework (CAF), information sharing, the role of the lead professional and ContactPoint. The course will give you an in depth understanding of these topic areas so that you can confidently discuss the concepts with staff members.

3. Awareness of Information Sharing

This is a basic awareness course in information sharing, for professionals who will not be ContactPoint users. The course will give you an understanding of information sharing. It can also provide practitioners knowledge prior to face to face training. The course comes with an online assessment and certificate on achieving a satisfactory pass mark

Teenage pregnancy training

This training is for anyone who works with young people, in any setting, anywhere in Newcastle.  The training will provide participants with an opportunity to explore the issues with regards to pregnancy choices, and in particular, give information around abortion. Time will also be spent allowing participants to develop their interpersonal and communication skills and to learn a range of techniques to use with young people who are faced with a pregnancy decision. Integrated working e-briefing

This introduction to Integrated Working in Newcastle e-briefing will give managers and practitioners an understanding of the integrated working tools and processes and demonstrate how they will be used through a case study.  The briefing has sound but can be used without it if your computer does not have that facility. The briefing covers;

  • The Common Assessment Framework
  • The role of Lead Professional
  • Information Sharing
  • ContactPoint
  • Children and Young People's Service Directory
  • Locality Working

CAF training

There are a series of training events set for CAF assessor training and CAF manager training This training is multi agency and is facilitated within localities by the integrated working team. See CAF training

Information sharing training

Information sharing training is a prerequisite condition for being accepted onto ContactPoint Training. Information Sharing Training is beginning in May 2009 and will run throughout the summer and autumn. These are seperate Information Sharing Training modules for managers, practitioners, and administrators.

If practitioners have not accessed the Information Sharing Training over the summer, they will not be able to attend ContactPoint Training from October / November onwards.

ContactPoint training

ContactPoint training for practitioners, administrators and managers will begin in January 2010 and the training programme will run for at least two years until all relevant children's practitioners are using ContactPoint.

National ContactPoint guidance and shielding policy are available on the ContactPoint page and specific areas can be found on the Every Child Matters website. (external link).

The Impact of Parental Mental Health on Children

This training course will be benificial for staff from voluntary, statutory and independent agencies whose work brings them into contact with children.

The course aims to raise awareness of the impact of parental mental health issues on parenting capacity, and to improve multi agency working with children and their families impacted on by parental mental health issues.

The course runs from 9am until 4pm and is available on the following dates:

Tuesday 20 April 2010 - Kenton Centre, Hillsview Ave, Kenton
Thursday 17 June 2010 - Gosforth Training Room, 5 Lansdowne Terrace East
Tuesday 28 September 2010 - Kenton Centre, Hillsview Ave, Kenton
Monday 6 December 2010 - Gosforth Training Room, 5 Lansdowne Terrace East

National integrated induction programme for Children's workforce practitioners

The CWDC Induction Training has been a highly successful programme that has effectively prepared Learning Mentors to develop their roles in educational settings. This programme has now been revised and creates a sustainable model for long-term use, with broader application to other children's workforce practitioners operating at a similar level.

Newcastle were one of 10 Children's Trusts that piloted this course in 2006/07, and are now offering this course to practitioners working in children's services in Newcastle to support induction as part of Newcastle Children's Services Workforce Strategy. NSCB training session 2010/11

The NSCB training programme aims to increase knowledge and skills in the field of safeguarding children in order to provide high quality services and improve outcomes for children, young people and their families and carers. Click to access the NSCB training plan including

Newcastle Safeguarding Children's Board (NSCB) on-line training

The NSCB online courses are ideal for everyone who comes into contact with children, young people, their parents or carers through their work in either the statutory or voluntary sector. They are endorsed by Newcastle Local Safeguarding Children Board (NSCB) and the Newcastle Domestic Violence and Abuse Partnership and are in line with the NSCB Training Strategy. These courses are mandatory within Local Authority Children's Services and the Primary Care Trust. Click here to access the Online Training.

Newcastle Safeguarding Adult Board (NSAB)

NSAB share a vision for a workforce that has the right knowledge and skills to recognise and effectively respond to abuse, and to work towards the prevention of abuse. To help achieve this, the Safeguarding Adults Unit is developing a range of new inter-agency training courses, designed to suit all levels of staff and volunteers from the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors.

There will be seven main courses on offer, with specialist training in areas such as Domestic Violence, Children and Families and Substance misuse being provided by our partner agencies. The Safeguarding Adults Unit can provide specialist training if requested.

Safe Newcastle

Safe Newcastle provides a mixed curriculum of training required for adults and the children's workforce practitioners, for details visit the Safe Newcastle website

Drug Training details:

  • Overdose training: covering signs, symptoms and responses to overdose situations. This training is for: people living or working with drug users, drug users
  • Parental Substance Misuse: covering the impact of drug and alcohol use on children, parental behaviour and family lifestyle; relevant policies and procedures. This training is for: anyone who works directly or indirectly with parents or carers who may be using drugs or alcohol providing you have attended a minimum of 'NSCB Safeguarding Children Group A' training and Basic Drug Awareness Training.
  • Crack and Cocaine: covering types of cocaine, neurological and physical effects, health implications, how to work with crack and cocaine users.
    This training is for: specialist drug workers, drug users, family members of drug users.
  • NCFE Level 2 Drug Awareness Studies and their applications covering understanding drug, alcohol and volatile substance use; recognising and responding to drug use; communicating with young people about drugs.
    This training is for: anyone who works, or is interested in working with drug or alcohol users, drug users and family members.
  • Working with family members of drugs users (carers) covering how drug use can affect other family members, what carers need, being carer-inclusive and carer-sensitive in your work.
    This training is for: specialist drug workers, staff in the criminal justice services, staff in carer support services and other staff in the health/social care sector.
  • Basic Drug Awareness: covering work of Safe Newcastle in relation to drugs; drugs and their effects, drugs and the law, accessing and referring to services. This training is for: anyone over the age of 18 living or working in Newcastle.
  • Working with Housing covering housing provision for people with drug and / or alcohol problems; how to refer people; preventing homelessness. The training is for: specialist drug workers

Mentoring and Befriending Foundation Training

The Mentoring and Befriending Foundation is the national strategic body offering support to practitioners and organisations working across the mentoring and befriending field. It is also funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to support the development of peer mentoring for young people aged 11-25. The MBF provides:

  • Advice in setting up or developing a mentoring/befriending or peer mentoring scheme
  • A wide range of publications, resources and leaflets
  • A website featuring news, events, research, case studies, funding opportunities and best practice
  • Guidance and support to help organisations achieve the Approved Provider Standard
  • Networking and training events plus an annual National Conference etc

The MBF offers training, guidance, resources and networking opportunities for practitioners and co-ordinators involved in the development of mentoring/befriending or peer mentoring programmes. The programme offers courses in 14 locations around the country.
