Our Stories - a parents viewpoint on ADHD

The aim of "Our Stories" was to give parents of children with ADHD an opportunity to tell their families stories, raise awareness with professionals at all levels including commissioning, work together to identify possible solutions and start to set an agenda for the future.

One hundred people attended the event from health, education, social services, youth offending, housing, fire brigade and the voluntary sector. Thirty-five people who attended were parents.

How did the parents tell their stories?

We wanted a creative medium in which parents could tell their stories so we approached the Discovery Museum outreach team to find out if they could help. Together we decided that digital stories would be a great way of doing this and also be lots of fun. We set to work immediately with the video designer and met with six parents to transform their stories in to digital videos with animation and graphics. The purpose was to set the scene for the ADHD event in September and introduce a number of issues relating to health, education, social services and youth/criminal justice. The parents stories highlight the reality of living with a child and young person with ADHD.

Event feedback report

The report shows the main themes, priority issues and recommendations that came out of the day. It is hoped to have a similar event in the future to feedback what we have been doing.
